DEFINITION: A virtual machine (VM) is a software based, fictive computer. Virtual machines may be based on specifications of a hypothetical computer or emulate the computer architecture and functions of a real world pc.

“Virtual Machines” serve many purposes for home and business use in Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Woodland Hills, and beyond.  In the field of computer repair I recently set up a virtual machine for a client that required Windows XP operating system to run various older programs that were not compatible with his current operating system of Windows 7.  In this situation, a virtual machine was the perfect solution to my client’s problem as he did not desire to do a complete upgrade of all software being used. Hard drives, just like any other electronic components, can break down after usage or just plain break. Hard drives are storage devices that hold massive amounts of data including operating systems, files, pictures, music, and several other types of data. A computer hard drive is basically platters that sit on a spindle and a device reads information off these platters when requested by the hardware or operating system.

Today, most hard drives are known as SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) drives and have replaced the older IDE (Integrated Device Electronics) hard drives. This software collects information about users that can sometimes be harmful and can be used to view user’s internet habits and preferences. Spyware can redirect internet browsers and slow down PCs, annoying many home or business users. Today’s computer users need to be aware of spyware and the effects it has on their computers.

Adware is another type of malware in a different classification than spyware. Adware is different than spyware in that it can be seen by users of programs that benefit from showing ads for free when using their software. (more…)
